Tesco is facing a fresh strike threat by its Irish staff over plans to lay off 140 workers at its head office in Dun Laoghaire, the Irish Times reports.

Union Siptu has told the company it plans to ballot its members on industrial action unless the company enters into "meaningful discussions" about the transfer of key support functions to the UK.

The union, which wants the job transfers halted until negotiations take place, claims that the company's actions on the matter stem from profiteering and greed.

It is demanding that the company gives a written commitment to put its restructuring plan on hold until talks over the proposed layoffs are completed.
