Tesco has set up a management training scheme designed to help fresh produce suppliers bring on and retain their staff.
The programme, developed with recruitment and training specialist MorePeople, will include seminars on subjects such as how to run productive meetings, effective delegation and presentation skills.
The course will culminate in trainees spending time on the shop floor in their local Tesco, to gain experience of how their product is handled and merchandised.
MorePeople director Guy Moreton said management training had not traditionally featured highly on the agenda of some fresh produce businesses.
"Learning on the job has been the norm in the past - and people have been promoted based on how long they've been in a job rather than their leadership skills.
"In order to retain the best people, companies need to pay serious attention to their development. Pay incentives will only take you so far."
