Tesco has named haulage giant Stobart Group as the distributor for its new 1.2 million sq ft import centre in Middlesbrough in a deal worth £25m a year.

Subsidiary Eddie Stobart will be tasked with the movement of the supermarket’s non-food products that arrive by sea into Tesco stores and distribution centres around the UK.

“This major new contract is aligned to Stobart’s multimodal strategy and gives us the potential to increase movements from road to rail, minimising disruption to UK roads and providing a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly solution,” claimed Stobart Group chief executive Andrew Tinkler.
