Tesco hosted a weekend of national collection by Red Cross volunteers in a bid to raise further money for the victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.

Prior to the event the company said the drive could raise as much as £1m for the relief fund.

Tesco group corporate affairs director, Lucy Neville-Rolfe, said: “This tragedy has touched us all and few could fail to be moved by the response of so many people to the plight of those caught up in the disaster.

“The response from Tesco people has produced a jigsaw of generosity with staff pulling together to do everything they can to help.”

Tesco has also been working with disaster charities to provide lorry loads of food and water in Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The Tesco clothing team has also distributed clothing and shoes to the region.
