Tesco has recorded a 4.5% increase in first-quarter like-for-like sales excluding petrol.

In a trading update released this morning for the 13 weeks to May 27, Tesco also revealed a 10.4% increase in group sales.

Total UK sales increased 9%, while like-for-like sales including petrol were up 5.5%.

In its international business, Tesco said that sales were up 15.1% at constant exchange rates.

It added that it was on track to deliver its largest ever programme of new store openings in its international business this year, which would provide more than six million sq ft of new selling space.

Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco, said: “We've made a good start to the year across the group. International is showing strong growth and pushing on well with new store development and the UK has made solid progress on top of two years of exceptional performance.”
