These colourful creations are the latest weapon in Tesco's war on single-use plastic bags.

The bags, which are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, were developed by celebrity designer Cath Kidston with proceeds from the sales going to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Tesco's charity of the year.

The 'classic blue spot' and 'multi floral fashion' print are the first two designs and will be launched in July. A further four will follow within the next six months.

A minimum of £250,000 will be raised for the charity, the retailer said. This, it claimed, would fund an additional 12,500 hours of nursing care at home for terminally ill patients and their families.

Tesco has ordered 733,000 of the bags. They will sell for £3.50 each.

Tesco has given out 1.3 million fewer bags since its Green Clubcard Points scheme was launched in August 2006.
