Sir Terry Leahy was paid £5.22m for the year ending February 2010.
The sum includes the Tesco chief executive’s basic salary, benefits and performance related bonuses.
Details of his pay emerged in Tesco’s annual report, which was released yesterday.
Despite guiding the UK’s largest retailer to record profits last year, Sir Terry’s pay is dwarfed by that of executives including Reckitt Benckiser boss Bart Becht. The Cillt Bang maker paid its chief executive more than £90m last year in salary, bonuses and shares.
New Marks & Spencer boss Marc Bolland is set to pocket around £15m for his first year in charge of the high street icon, while Dalton Philips, who replaced him at the helm of Morrisons, will be paid around £6m.
