Tesco is planning to build high street department stores in a bid to take on Marks & Spencer, BHS and Debenhams.

The first of the multi-level stores is planned for the site of an existing store in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, according to a marketing document obtained by Property Week.

The stores would be a “whole new concept” selling food, televisions, clothing, homewares and toys over three floors.

Tesco denied the store was a new format, claiming it would be similar in size to its Extra stores.
