The supermarket group also revealed that UK sales had increased by 10.1% during the period and that like-for-like sales increased by 7.2%, or 5.7% excluding petrol.
International sales increased 16.1% for the period.
Analysts had predicted Tesco to record like-for-like sales growth of 5-5.5%.
Tesco said that during the Christmas period seasonal foods, especially its Tesco Finest range, sold well.
Growth in non food, it added, was strong, with home entertainment, electronics, clothing, toys and gifts selling well.
“Our customer service and product availability were strong and one-stop shopping for food and non food at our 117 Extra stores was particularly popular,” the retailer said.
Tesco also revealed that it delivered more than one million orders in the four-week period before Christmas via its online offering Tesco.com, while its mobile phone service Tesco Mobile signed up its one-millionth customer during December.
