Tesco has posted an 11.1% jump in group sales for the seven weeks ended January 4 driven by a strong performance from its UK business.

Total UK sales for the period were up 8%, with like-for-like sales up 4.8% from the 3.8% posted in the third quarter.

In its Christmas and New Year trading statement Tesco said it had seen strong volumes of 5% “reflecting our determination to deliver the best value for customers”.

However, international sales from stores in central Europe, Ireland and the Far East dropped to 24.9% from the 29% achieved in the third quarter.

The supermarket giant now owns 152 international hypermarkets, giving it over 18 million sq ft of sales space overseas.
