Tesco has come in for criticism after it emerged the supermarket giant is refusing to pay staff that were unable to make it in to work during the recent period of severe weather.
According to the Daily Mail, the retail giant has informed staff that took unscheduled time off during the cold snap they must choose between losing pay or holiday, swapping shifts or changing days off.
The move prompted criticism from union officials.
“It’s scrooge come late for the workers,” said GMB general secretary Gary Smith. “We have all these bankers claiming they have contractual rights to huge bonuses yet companies are docking pay for people who could not get to work because of the inclement whether.”
A spokesman for Tesco responded: “Staff who missed work due to the weather have been asked to make the time back and have been given a number of ways that they can do this.”
