Tesco has spread its mobile phone business further across Europe by launching in Hungary.

The move comes via a 50-50 joint venture with Vodafone – its first tie-up with the telecoms giant. In the UK, Tesco’s mobile phone service is provided by O2.

Having entered Hungary in 1995, Tesco now has more than 200 stores across the country.

“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to offer Hungarian customers value and innovation and we believe that Tesco Mobile will offer both,” said national chief executive Gerry Gray.

“In Vodafone we have a partner with the know-how and potential to make Tesco Mobile as successful in Hungary as it is in the UK, Ireland and Slovakia.”
