Tesco's foray into the US could be a larger footprint than anticipated after it emerged this week that it has signed a lease for a 32,500sq ft store.
The former Albertson's store in Glassell Park, Los Angeles, is expected to be one of its first to open next year, and is more than twice the size of what was believed to be in mind.
Tesco US chief executive Tim Mason had said its US venture would be based on its Express format. Analysts took that to mean 12,000-16,000 sq ft.
A spokeswoman would not comment, saying Tesco wanted customers to hear about its plans first.
