Tesco has begun trials of radio frequency identification tags at its non-food distribution centre in Milton Keynes.

The tags are attached to cases travelling between the distribution centre and stores at Peterborough and St Neots.

Tesco IT director Colin Cobain said the trial gave Tesco better visibility in the supply chain, adding: “It is also helps us to improve product availability for customers and make life simpler for our staff.”

Separate trials of RFID tags on individual DVDs at Tesco stores in Sandhurst and Leicester will continue until early next year. Tags and readers are being supplied by Alien Technology and software is provided by IBM Business Consulting Services.
