Tesco has won planning approval for a new 86,000 sq ft Extra store to replace one less than half its size in Plymouth.

Part of a wider redevelopment project at the Transit Way District Centre in Honicknowle, it will be Tesco's largest store in the south west. Plymouth City Council's planning committee granted permission despite receiving 26 letters raising concerns about the proposal. Tesco will share the site with 13 other units that have been earmarked for shops, businesses and foodservice outlets.

Tesco's existing store designed and developed more than 20 years ago by another retailer had proved popular with local shoppers but had been running "beyond the levels for which it was designed", said Tesco corporate affairs manager Juliette Bishop.

The new store will feature a sustainable timber frame and natural ventilation instead of air conditioning.
