Tesco has edged ahead of WHSmith to become the UK market leader in news and magazine sales.

Figures supplied by distributor Comag covering the last quarter of 2002 put Tesco in first place with 12.02% of the market (figures exclude the Dillons and Supercigs CTNs that Tesco plans to sell).

WH Smith comes in at second place with an 11.49% market share, ahead of Sainsbury’s at 4.97%, TM Retail at 4.2% and Asda at 4.17%.
