September 22, 1990. High noon will come to Castle Bromwich next month when next-door-neighbours Safeway and Aldi open within five days of each other. First to cut the ribbon will be the Germans on Thursday, October 18 with Safeway's 30,000 sq ft unit on the following Tuesday. "We do not see Aldi as a competitor," said a confident Safeway spokesperson this week. "Our store will have over 20,000 lines, as against their 600, with only about 200 overlapping." Sales through the first Aldi stores are said to be so far ahead of expectations that the company is already seeking a second depot. {{COUNTERPOINT }}
