July 14 1990. Speculation was this week mounting that Aldi will look east of the Pennines for the fourth phase of its UK investigation. This week's opening of the secretive German discounter's first store outside the Birmingham area adds substance to the supposition that the northern M1 corridor is the next target after Merseyside. The Leicester unit, Aldi's fourth, lies on a line bordered at one end by the chain's Lutterworth depot with the populated South Yorkshire area at the other.
