The Co-operative Group is remaining tight-lipped over reports that it is to close Somerfield's distribution centre in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The society axed 140 jobs at the depot last year following a fall in distribution volumes to Somerfield stores. Workers at the depot have told local media that they had been informed by The Co-op Group that the depot would be shut down in the second half of 2011, but this has not been confirmed.

In February, the society received planning permission for a huge 467,000 sq ft regional distribution centre in Andover, Hampshire, which will serve stores in the south west.

It is also in the middle of a three-year logistics review following the Somerfield acquisition and is transferring jobs from smaller DCs to larger depots. It has already closed two food distribution sites in the north east of England to make way for a new 270,000 sq ft RDC in Birtley.

A spokesman for The Co-op Group said: "No final decision has yet been made on the location of the new facility, which is expected to open in the second half of next year, nor on the role of the Wincanton-operated Somerfield depot at Bridgwater."
