Nearly one in four shoppers use co-ops and are very happy about the service they get particularly on fair trade goods and convenience.
A survey of 3,022 shoppers, carried out exclusively for The Grocer by HI Europe, showed that 23% of main shoppers use co-ops - most (21%) for occasional or top up shopping.
Among these shoppers, loyalty was very high: 44% acknowledged the wide range of free trade products available in co-ops, while 64% noted the stores’ convenience.
However, among the wider shopping community, the verdict was less favourable. The co-ops achieved above-average ratings for fair trade and convenience (22% and 28%), but lower than average ratings in eight other key areas, including value for money, quality, freshness and décor.
