Morrisons races towards skilling up 100,000 staff

Morrisons has been crowned the industry's best employer for the second year running thanks to what the judges described as its "all-round holistic approach" to staff training and development.

Last year a staggering 48,500 members of staff achieved a QCF (formerly NVQ) Level 2 in Retail Skills, putting it well on track to hit its target of 100,000 by the end of this year.

A further 5,000 employees completed retail apprenticeships. The scheme was accelerated this year with 12,000 staff expected to qualify.

Morrisons' efforts resulted in a 7% increase in productivity and a 6% reduction in staff turnover.

Morrisons also embraced the government's Big Society initiative with a pledge to offer opportunities to 1,000 former homeless people.
