Going topless: how Brakes is slashing C02 emissions

Introducing sophisticated route-planning software allowed Brakes to take 60 vehicles off the roads and remove 3,000,000km from its delivery routes equating to 2,329 tonnes of CO2 savings. A further spend on 26 double-deck trailers will save another 700,000 litres of fuel a year.

Brakes has also worked with suppliers to drive down the amount of packaging used during transportation. 'Topless' boxes for food deliveries have saved more than 280 tonnes of packaging annually. It also plans a 10% cut to own-label packaging by 10% by the end of 2013 vs 2009.

In its second year of partnership with FareShare, Brakes will have donated a million meals by the year-end. It is a foodservice leader when it comes to minimising food waste, with just 0.2% of fresh produce going into landfill.
