Tesco has thrown its weight behind its One Stop fascia, committing to refurbish and open further stores.

Tesco has more than 500 One Stop stores and this financial year is refurbishing 86 with more getting a makeover next year.

Tesco is also seeking further sites. It is looking for neighbourhood and roadside stores in prominent locations with a gross area of 3,000 sq ft and a minimum population of 4,000 within half a mile.

However, some One Stops will still be converted to the Tesco Express fascia. Fourteen were converted this year, though no further conversions are planned in this financial year. Speculation regarding Tesco's commitment to One Stop surfaced in September after the retailer closed a store in Weybridge, Surrey, near a recently opened Tesco Metro, a move that sparked local anger.

In Ashtead, Surrey, a One Stop was shut and replaced by a Tesco Express on a site where two neighbouring stores had also closed.
