Shares in Unilever were on the up yesterday, buoyed by takeover rumours.

The shares rose 31p to finish on £16.47 yesterday as investors speculated that the consumer goods company could be next in line for a takeover, following Danone's acquisition of Cow & Gate baby food company Numico earlier this week.

Traders suggested that US rival Colgate-Palmolive could be interested in a takeover, according to reports in the Independent.
