I have been quite pleased with the innovation in the category over the past couple of years. It is difficult for producers to find areas to grow the category and there have been some interesting concepts coming out, and I get the impression they are really thinking hard about how to innovate.
There is a definite move down from premium into cut-price brands. Price increases are pushing premium brands over the £5 mark, which I think will have a real effect on the dynamics of the market.
Of the premium brands, we have started stocking Benson & Hedges packs of 14. I think this is one of the ones to watch. Marlboro’s Blend 28 has been doing pretty well as well.
Looking forward, the biggest thing will be the smoking ban in Scotland and then England.
