Waitrose continued its assault on the convenience market this week, opening two new stores on Thursday.

The new sites are both in the London area: one on Old Brompton Road in South Kensington, the other at Palmers Green, Enfield. Both follow the retailer’s convenience-format, which includes an in-store bakery.

The upmarket retailer has focused on expansion of its convenience offering over the last year and plans to open 300 c-stores over the next decade.

Speaking to The Grocer in December, Waitrose head of convenience Jon Arnold said: “Fundamentally these stores are still Waitrose, we just have to do it on a smaller scale and do it differently to our competitors.”
