A Dorset branch of Waitrose is using a fleet of electric bicycles to deliver groceries to customers, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Bosses at the Poole branch said they wanted to up the number of online delivery capabilities without increasing the number of vans on the road. The Eco-Bikes can tow up to 20 bags of shopping within a 15-mile radius of the store, according to store manager Sarah Candy.

“I guess it is a bit of a throwback to the old days of grocery boys,” she said. “But sometimes it doesn’t make sense to put a van out in busy traffic as the deliveries take a lot longer as well as the impact on the environment.”

If successful, the trial could be extended across other Waitrose stores, the report claimed.
