Waitrose is forging ahead with an expansion pledge to double its estate in the north by announcing plans to build a new RDC that will create 600 jobs.

The centre, which is subject to planning approval, will be based in Chorley, Lancashire, and is expected to open in autumn 2012.

It will become the supermarket's fifth RDC and allow it to service up to 80 stores that are part of its growing estate in the North of England and Scotland. "We're currently still under-represented in the north, a key area for our growth ambitions," said supply chain director David Jones.
