Waitrose is continuing to extend the opening hours of its stores as it brings the company more into line with its competitors.

Its Kensington High Street branch - near to the location of the first UK Whole Foods Market store, which opens next year - will now be open until 10pm on Mondays and Fridays.

Its first two Scottish stores in Edinburgh have longer hours in response to a request from the local community, moving from 7pm closing to 8pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.

A spokesman said: "We've always tried to accommodate our customers' wishes in the local area and always look to review trading hours if shoppers want us to."

Last summer, Waitrose trialled new opening hours at the chain's relocated West Ealing store in London, which was the first in its portfolio to open from 8am to 10pm on Thursdays and Fridays, with earlier opening hours from Monday to Wednesday (The Grocer, 25 June 2005, p10).
