Waitrose has posted a “spectacular” 12% jump in overall annual sales at its supermarket s, which are part of the John Lewis Partnership.

For the year to January 31, Waitrose said like-for-like sales were up 5%.

Waitrose opened a new branch at Wandsworth in February, with further outlets to follow in the coming months at Sanderstead, Newbury and Kensington. Its Newmarket store is due to be relocated and work is to start soon on a new 'Food & Home' store in Maidstone.

JLP reported full-year group pre-tax profit of £174m as sales rose 8% to £5.1bn.

JLP said some £87m would be distributed to staff by the way of the ‘partnership bonus’ and noted this was the equivalent to more than six weeks’ pay.
