Waitrose head of convenience Jon Arnold said the retailer's research had revealed customers shopped its smaller stores by protein groups, often coming in with the main part of their evening meal in mind, and basing the rest of their shop around it.
The retailer, which has 11 c-stores but plans as many as 300 in the next 10 years, also revealed ranges in its c-stores were geared towards shoppers looking for items for the next 24 hours. Its larger stores focus on serving customers for 24 to 72 hours.
Waitrose opened two further c-stores this week, in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey and Hornchurch in Essex. More will open in the next two weeks.
