First Quench, parent of Thresher off-licences, is to become the first new partner to join the Nectar loyalty-card scheme launched two months ago by Sainsbury in conjunction with Debenhams, BP and Barclaycard.

The Sunday Times reported that First Quench’s 2,000 off-licences will offer Nectar reward points from next spring. CEO David Williams said the move would encourage new customers to the chain, while he expects existing shoppers to spend more.

Cadbury Schweppes has increased its offer for Adams the US chewing gum maker by some £100m, according to the Observer.

The UK-based confectionery and soft drinks giant’s new bid stands at $4.3bn for Adams with brands such as Dentyne, Bubbaloo gum and Halls throat lozenges.
