Sir; What a dramatic u-turn from Aldi with this month's demand on their suppliers for a 5% cost reduction (The Grocer, 11 July, p4).

Clearly Tony Baines, Aldi's UK MD of buying and the author of the letter, wasn't in the same audience as me when his boss, Paul Foley, spoke at the BRC annual conference only four weeks ago.

Foley's message was that suppliers must refuse to be "bullied" by the major retailers into not supplying discount retailers. Some mixed messages here then from the usually well-oiled Aldi PR machine.
