Sir; The talk in The Grocer recently of 1,000 Tesco Express outlets was dismissed by Spar md Jerry Marwood.
Recent SRCG industry and shopper research has confirmed there are two really big things happening in convenience today. Shoppers' demand for convenience is rocketing. And the Big Box' retailers see themselves as convenience majors as well as big store majors.
Tesco, Sainsbury and Marks and Spencer are getting better at meeting shoppers' small shop needs. They are setting ever-higher standards, which are fast becoming the expected norm.
With global consolidation, these retailers will become more powerful and the pressures on traditional stores to respond will mount. The prize is huge: it's a share of the £75bn spent on purchases of less than £10.
One shopper quote is "It may be convenient for retailers, but it's not convenient for me".
Perhaps Jerry Marwood should look and see if all his stores are really shopper convenient?
