Shopworkers Union USDAW has called on the government to introduce laws preventing retailers from opening on Christmas Day. The demand follows news that three forecourt Sainsbury's Local stores and a number of convenience stores run by the CWS and the West Midlands Co-op will open on December 25. With the exception of Sainsbury, the remaining multiples insist they will close. "There's just no need for it," said USDAW spokesman Barry Allen. "The British economy will not collapse if a few people can't buy stuffing for the turkey on Christmas Day. "You give these retail bosses an inch, and they take a mile." But West Midlands Co-op food services controller Mark Austin said: "People often need to pop out for something they may have forgotten for Christmas Day." {{NEWS }}
