Welsh farm bosses have urged the Welsh Assembly to step in to prevent the closure of the Aeron Valley cheese packing facility.
The owner of the plant, Ireland’s Dairygold, said it was consulting on the future of the site in Felinfach, south Wales, because of over-capacity in the UK’s cheese packing sector.
The facility employs 115 staff and has a capacity of 1,000 tonnes of cheese per week. Eifion Hughes, chairman of the Farmers Union of Wales dairy committee, said: “Closure would be another serious setback so soon after the closure of Llangadog Creamery.”
But site manager John Thomas warned: “If a solution cannot be found, then the management will need to consider ceasing operations.”
