Bramley sluggish With plenty of good quality cooking apples available in store, growers are hoping that their Bramley week, planned to take place from January 31, will boost demand. Ian Mitchell, chairman of the promotional group that contributes voluntary funding, said the early season, despite the heavy volumes, had been disappointing. Prices on the wholesale markets are currently between 18p and 28p/ lb according to size. Multiples appear to have taken the industry's message on board that the UK's virtually sole culinary variety has to be identified more strongly. Asda has become the third chain to adopt Bramley branding at point of sale, using corner flashes on display trays. Previously Sainsbury opted for branded polyliners and Tesco reproduced tray talkers. Mitchell hopes this will encourage others to follow suit. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
