Top 50 Costcutter retailer Sunstar Group has sold a quarter of its estate to The Co-operative Group to focus on its fledging businesses in Morocco and Pakistan.
The London-based operator sold six of its 21 stores to the society this week for an undisclosed sum. At the same time, The Co-op also bought four Costcutter stores belonging to fellow indie Tothaal Group.
The Co-op said the 10 stores would start trading as Co-op stores before Christmas and would receive a full £3m refit in the new year.
“These stores are in excellent locations across central and Greater London and will complement our existing store network in the capital and will be valuable additions to our portfolio,” said Co-op food CEO Steve Murrells. Sunstar is 40th on The Grocer’s Top 50, with sales of £25m. It opened Costcutter’s first store in Morocco last year, and its first in Pakistan last month.
