Scottish fishermen are struggling to cope with the "crippling" price of fuel, the Scottish Fishermen's Federation has admitted.
Fuel now accounted for 50% of the cost of a single fishing trip, SFF claimed. It has called for more government help to match the support given by the French and Spanish governments to their fleets.
The organisation has lobbied Scottish cabinet secretary Richard Lochhead, who raised the issue with EU fisheries commissioner Joe Borg this week. "It is not sustainable for the fleet to continue operating against the background of such crippling costs," said SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong.
