An onion supplier has developed a Spanish onion to replace supplies from the southern hemisphere.
Rustler Produce has developed the concept, which will cut down on food miles, exclusively for Sainsbury.
The onion is slightly paler in appearance compared to a standard Spanish onion and resembles an early UK onion with a full and strong flavour.
Russell Crowe, senior vegetable buyer with Sainsbury, said: “This initiative will allow us to reduce dependency on southern hemisphere onions for the first time.”
The new variety are now in store, priced at 64p a kilo.
