Once a major force in the summer market, Cyprus grape shipments have continued to dwindle as a result of a general acreage contraction. Increased demands from the tourist activity, increased competition on the UK market and more profitable alternative outlets such as Scandinavia have also taken their toll. There has already been a call for subsidies by the trade to help cover the costs of marketing varieties such as Perlette, Sultana, Cardinal, Gold and Superior. Any opportunities to develop organic production have been considered unfeasible unless additional grants are forthcoming, which might be possible when the island gains EU membership. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
