Dairy Crest Group plc announced the closure of its Enfield factory, with a loss of 320 jobs, at its AGM on Thursday.
The fresh dairy products factory, run by joint venture Yoplait Dairy Crest, produces own brand yogurts and soft cheeses for the large retailers and ingredient makers.
However, the factory will close early in 2005 because the company is finding the own brand market increasingly difficult. Some of the production is to be transferred to the refurbished “all singing, all dancing” factory in Chard, Somerset, but the group will now focus on the manufacture of branded products, including Petit Filous and Frubes.
Dairy Crest chairman Simon Oliver said during his statement at the AGM that the closure would have a negligible impact on Dairy Crest Group profits, excluding exceptional items, for the year ending March 31, 2005.
