New year cuts in the milk prices paid by processors to farmers have been blasted by union officials.

Arla and First Milk have cut their farmgate prices by 2ppl and 1.25ppl respectively, while Dairy Farmers of Britain reduced its price by 2ppl from November.

However NFU Scotland argued that tight UK milk supply and dedicated retailer milk pools meant processors should be insulated from weakening global commodity prices. "The scale of the Arla cut is hard to comprehend," said NFUS milk committee chairman Willie Lamont.
