A competition to create a national ‘Cheddar anthem’ has been won by an East London choir with a song set to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory.
Cheddar, sung by the Upbeat Choir from Wanstead, features lyrics such as “Cheddar you are my Venus, Cheddar you are the word, none shall come between us, incomparable curd”.
The song received 41% of the public vote, said the British Cheese Board, which organised the competition, while the accompanying video was viewed more than 5,000 times on YouTube,
Secretary Nigel White said the Cheese Board was thrilled with the public reaction to its competition and the enthusiasm shown by those who entered.
“The Upbeat Choir is a very worth winner and demonstrates perfectly how passionate people are about British-made Cheddar,” he added.
The Upbeat Choir’s musical director, Tim Sutton, said the choir had only been going for a short while and had greatly enjoyed taking part.
“Our success represents the twin British pillars of community – music-making and Cheddar – and I couldn’t be prouder, he said.
The runner-up was Dr Busker, who reworked Jerusalem and shot a video in a field full of dairy cows.
