A dairy-free Swiss cheese – missing the holes – grabbed victory in the 2012 FreeFrom Food Awards last night.
Vegan-friendly Swiss manufacturer Vegusto walked away with the overall winner accolade for its Mild Aromatic Dairy-free Cheese at the event, hosted by Antony Worrall Thompson in London’s Docklands.
The cheese is free of dairy, gluten, soya and egg and contains sunflower, coconut and rapeseed oils. It saw off competition from five other category winners.
Michelle Berriedale-Johnson, who chaired the panel of judges, said dairy-free and vegan manufacturers had “struggled for years to make a really tasty cheese substitute”.
“We are not talking vintage cheddar here,” she admitted. “But we are talking a very pleasant, tasty cheese that you could serve to anyone on a cracker or in a sandwich and they would not even notice that it was dairy-free.”
