A Somerset cheesemaker has managed to increase its exports to South Korea by 50% this year thanks to the halo effect of the London 2012 Olympics - and an appearance on South Korean television.
Alvis Bros - which produces conventional, organic and PDO West Country Farmhouse Cheddar - has been supplying cheese to Asia for about three years.
Its business in South Korea was boosted earlier this year when head of collaboration Tim Harrap went on a trade mission to South Korea with UK Trade and Investments.
“As well as deepening our insight into the Korean market, our distributor also discussed our involvement in a British promotion in the Lotte department store, which eventually ran just before the Olympics,” Harrap said.
His trip came after a Korean TV company visited Alvis in January to film cheesemaking at Alvis’ Somerset farm for a programme broadcast in February. “It was the perfect opportunity to tell our story, educate our consumers and raise our profile,” said Harrap.
Volume sales of Alvis’s mild Cheddar and PDO extra mature and vintage Cheddar were up by 50% this September compared with September 2011.
