Own-label supplier David Woods Baking is looking to launch a speciality bread brand.

The company, which supplies pastries and speciality bread to in-store bakeries, is considering the move after completing its acquisition of London-based European bread specialist La Fornaia bakery earlier this year.

Artisan bakery had a strong future, said DWB consumer development head James Street, but there was a potential gap for a standout branded player. “It is something we are seriously considering,” he added. “La Fornaia is recognised in the trade for its quality and heritage.”

The company plans to invest around £500,000 in La Fornaia in the next 12 months to boost efficiency.

The acquisition has added Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Ryvita to DWB’s customer base, which also includes Birds Eye, Morrisons and Asda.

DWB, which is working with retailers to launch eight own-label speciality lines next spring, said it was hoping to grow its total sales revenue by 30% in 2014. In the year to 31 March 2012, DWB turnover rose 3% to £15.15m, according to records filed at Companies House.
