Fresh Del Monte has reported strong first-quarter growth on the back of a boost in fruit sales.

The US fresh produce giant said global sales for the quarter to 2 April were up 7% to $943m (£628m) year-on-year. Higher sales in the banana, fresh produce and prepared food business sectors were credited for the increase.

Gross profits were up 18% to $98.8m (£66m) after the company raised selling prices in the gold pineapple, fresh cut and prepared food produce sectors, although selling prices for bananas fell in Europe.
