Safeway has started delivering pizza, Indian and Chinese food to customers from selected Fresh to Go stores in and around London.
It is also offering meal deals like curry, rice and naan bread or large pizza, beer or wine, in a bid to get a piece of the lucrative catering market, as plans for its Café †resco restaurant chain have been reined in.
Safeway communications director Kevin Hawkins said: "We are rolling out deliveries selectively in our refurbished Fresh to Go stores.
"It is down to the individual managers' discretion whether they think it is a good idea to offer it from their store."
Customers can phone orders through on a national rate number for delivery within a two-mile radius of store. Specially equipped vans deliver from 4pm-11pm Sunday to Friday, and 11am-11pm on Saturdays.
