The new Christmas sales figures show just how competitive the current market is and how important differentiating from the competition will be in 2012. Strong own-label sales at Sainsbury’s also showed the impact a strong own-label food portfolio can have on margins. Simply cutting prices is no longer enough.

Own label is one of the few growing sectors in the retail market, but retailers need to break from the pack and find new ways to innovate if they are going to be successful.
